The Inner Kitchen

Not sure how many of you sign up to receive daily inspirational messages from anybody.  Even though I post a daily thought for the day here, I enjoy receiving food for my own spiritual journey. Today was no exception. I received this daily inspiration from Don Miguel Ruiz, one of my favorite spiritual writers, which read, “Your heart is like a magical kitchen. Your heart can create any amount of love, not just for yourself, but also for the whole world. Open your heart, open your magical kitchen, and refuse to walk around the world begging for love. In your heart is all the love you need.”

This really made me stop and think for a moment.  So often, we think of the kitchen as this physical space where we create amazing food.  In our physical kitchens, we can create all kinds of amazing dishes. It is in our physical kitchens that we create food to feed not just ourselves but all those who walk through our doors.  For some of us, it is the public, but for everybody else it is those who are members of our family and circle of friends.

However, our hearts also have the potential to create a spiritual food, love, which can feed ourselves and all those we meet. Love is one of those things that is multisensory.  You can sit down to eat a meal and taste the love in the food.  Sometimes it is not that the dish itself is anything complex, but there is something about it, something that makes it taste so good.  You can literally taste the love in the food.  We can taste love in our food, we can see it in someone’s eyes in the way they look at us. Sometimes you can hear love in someone’s voice or feel it in their touch.

Regardless of the skills we may have in our physical kitchen, we all have the potential to be master chefs in the kitchen when it comes to creating love for self and others. The kind of love we can create for ourselves is so much healthier then the fast food kind of love that you might try to pick up from the “drive through” when we order a “mc lust.” It is the kind of love that keeps us full so we are not tempted to do any impulse buying when somebody offers us one of those “buy one get one free” kind of deals.  We have the capacity to fill our spiritual kitchens with a never-ending supply of unconditional love for ourselves and others.

While it may take some time to master the recipe, it is easy to learn. One just has to make the decision that we are each worthy of loving ourselves and that just for today, I am going to love myself.  You cannot create anything if you have not decided to create it.  So start with the decision to create a batch of love for yourself.  Enjoy it. Create batches of it with a big pot of affirmations about how worthy you are.  Throw in a dash of knowing that the Creator smiled the day you were born.  Mix it together with the knowledge that you are perfect just as you are at this very moment.

Sometimes we may have gotten so used to feeding ourselves “junk food” that this healthier version may take some adjusting of our spiritual taste buds. Stick with it, before you know it you will be whipping up batches of love for yourself and others. So open your heart, mind, and soul and prepare to embark on a new and different culinary adventure.
