Look at the View

These were the words of wisdom
from a homeless man
who said
“look at the view.”
He had nothing,
but he had everything.
He could see the world
and the beauty in it.
He saw the view
not just what was in front of him.
His philosophy taught me to see
not just what was in front of me,
but to pay attention to the world and
look at the view.

Searching

Searching

I woke up to someone singing
looking for love in all the wrong places.
Throughout the day it had me thinking
about how often I look for reflections of myself
in others and in the world.
What if I am searching in the wrong place?
What if I am looking for the Ultimate in all the wrong places?
What if I looked for the stranger walking their dog in me?
What if I looked for the path in me?
What if I looked for the plants in me?
What if I looked for the sky in me?
What if I looked for the earth, air, fire and wind in me?
If I remembered that everything created by the Ultimate is within me,
would I be better able to see it all in me?
Would I stop searching for the Ultimate
in places other than myself?

Beauty

Beauty

Growing up, my mother would take me window shopping.
Rarely did we go into the store.
We would stop and look.
My mother would point out
the beauty in each window.
She taught me to see the beauty in life,
to be able to appreciate what I saw,
without having to have it.
Recently a friend of mine looked at me strangely
because I commented about a guy being handsome.
He is, but it doesn’t mean I want him,
or want to be in a relationship with him.
It simply means I can appreciate the beauty
the Ultimate has created in this world
and see and appreciate it for what it is.
Like Matthew Fox, I can see beauty in the cracks.
I can see the beauty in the stains in old coffee cups,
I can see beauty in all of creation.
Seeing it doesn’t mean I have to buy it,
want it,
or crave it.
It just means I see it,
appreciate it,
and give thanks for its contribution
to beautifying the world I live in.

Beyond the Usual

Beyond the Usual

The crackfinder,
that is what she called me,
my major professor.
She said I saw value in the people
who had fallen into the cracks of society.
It was not just that I saw value,
I saw the Ultimate.
It is easy to look at temples and synagogues,
everyday images and representations of the Divine,
but what if we look beyond the usual representations.
What if we see the Ultimate
in the homeless person,
in the prostitute,
in the addict,
in the ones who we would call the least of thee?
What if we saw the Ultimate
in the animals that have been
abandoned,
neglected,
and left to die?
What if we saw the Ultimate
in the hood,
in those areas that even make the hood look good?
What if we moved beyond the usual
and saw the Ultimate in everything,
everyone,
and every place?
The Ultimate does not just shine in the
usual people, places and things,
but in the unusual.
Can you see the Ultimate in the unusual?
If not, look again,
and keep looking until you see
the Ultimate in the Unusual.

Visioning

Visioning

I have a vision,
or at least I am spending time
envisioning a world filled with
peace,
compassion,
and wholeness.
A world where people genuinely care
about each other,
other inhabitants
and the environment.
I have to be that example
that I want to see
reflected back to me.
So each day I do what I can
to be the change I want to see
in this world.
I try to move through this world
and offer peace to each other.
I work on being compassionate
with others and with myself
during those challenging times.
I practice being the bridge
between groups so
we may live in a world
which celebrates diversity
and restructures so we
experience equity.
Maybe a vision is a dream,
but this is mine
and what I am working
to make happen in my life.

Talk to Me

When I find myself drawn to something,
I have to stop and listen,
because it is trying to
talk to me.

Anything that is alive
has the power and ability
to share a wisdom, lesson, and
talk to me.

The cracks in the driveway
drew me in one day and
between the cracks I saw the beauty
they were revealing to me.

I watched the birds as
they went from branch to branch
grabbing what they needed
telling me you have what you need

I sat in the sun
feeling the warmth wash over me
covering me like a blanket
telling me I am loved

All that is alive
is speaking to us
bringing us lessons
talking to us,
we just need to listen

Spiritual Bumps

Sometimes we hit a
spiritual bump in our life.
That thing that jars us
and makes us think.
The moment that we come
off of autocruise and
call on our spiritual practices
to do more then get through it,
but to understand the meaning
to the spiritual bump.

This morning I woke up in tears,
grieving losses
which happened years ago.
It was through prayer and processing,
which I came to realize I had not
taken the time to grieve.
The message which triggered this
was not about me
but what was about me
was the grief it triggered.

The grief over my isolation.
The grief over the loss of
who I thought were friends.
The grief over things I thought I had grieved,
only to discover I had not.

Sometimes we need those spiritual bumps
to come to us in our dreams,
in our lives, and
in our visions
to give us deeper meaning
into our lives
and the purpose behind them

The New Story

When I was a little girl
I worried about being liked.
I cared what people thought,
but not as much as I did
as I grew older.
I went through a phase where
I cared about first impressions,
others evaluations.
what they thought,
what they said, and
what they believed about me.
I thought others thought
more about me then they did.

Now I know others rarely think of me
and if they do,
is not as often I could imagine.
They may have an impression
or an evaluation.
They may tell me what they think,
but that is about them
and what they believe
and what their expectations are.
their story is about them,
not me.
What matters most,
is what I think of me and
that what I think of me
is positive, loving, and affirming.

Hold on to the Mystery

“You see God so clearly,” he said
He was wrong.
There are glimpses,
moments, and
experiences, but
they are surrounded by Mystery.

They transcend description.
They are Yugen.
They are those moments too deep
And too mysterious for words.
They are Yugen

Yugen is dim,
Deep
Mysterious.
The experiences which transcend
Know we have experienced something holy.
Profound grace.

Becoming the Tree

Dear God,

I know you never put more on us then we can bear, but this year has been filled with challenges. If I had to pick a word for that I have learned this year, it would be tenacity. I have learned to have the determination to rise about difficult circumstances. It does not mean it has been easy, but I am making myself rise. I am finding the strength within myself to keep on going.

There have been days when I felt so deeply and did see my own strength, but I would remember to release the fears that were obscuring my vision. You found your way of reminding me to be like the Tree of Heaven, the tree Betty Smith wrote about in her novel A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. She wrote, “Look at everything as though you were seeing it either for the first time or last time. Then your time on Earth will be filled with joy.”

Thank you for always reminding me that I am the author of my story. I can edit and revise it anytime I wish to. I remember watching a video with Kyle Cease where he had these people have a conversation with him a year from now after having made the decision to follow their dreams, so I was thinking, what if I wrote you notes as if it were a year from now, five years from now, and maybe 10 years from now telling you how amazing my life is. So today I am going to begin the journey by telling you what my vision for the next 10 years looks like. If this is indeed where you are guiding me, I know we will be there.

Dear God,

Life is so good. I am taking a break from all the sessions and activities at my first Pampered Chef conference. It has been amazing to have met so many people and to have been able to cross stage as an Advanced Director with so many of my team members in the audience. It is awesome that this summer, for the first time in decades I am not worrying about how I am going to make it through the summer financially. I am finally done writing my book and have it all ready to go to the publisher. So, thank you for an awesome year. It was not always easy, but I know that everyone joined in their own time and you put everything in place where it was supposed to be. I am grateful for reminding me to claim pre-designated writing times and so going in the other room really helped me. It also helped to start a spiritual writing group that met here monthly to talk about tour progress.

Week 7, Day 5 – Spirituality

I found myself laughing uncontrollably for some reason when I read assignment 3. As I sat there and watched my cats first stare me down trying to figure out who was going to win the battle for the next serving of Friskie’s treats. And of course, yes they won. They always do. Once they had received their blessings, they ate them, although I am not sure that they said a prayer of thanksgiving or not. Ate them, and then began the ritual of stretching and cleaning and licking themselves in a diversity of position. Then they stretched out in their respective spaces, got into what I am assuming was a comfortable position in their favorite sleeping areas in our office and settled in for a good nights nap. That is until they wake up at 2 am and do the cat races up and down the hallway. I am sure there is a spiritual lesson to be learned in there, but I am not sure that at present I have the eyes to see it.
